The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program in Canada has undergone significant changes as of November 1, 2024, affecting eligibility and application processes. Here’s an overview to help you navigate these updates:
Understanding the PGWP
The PGWP is an open work permit that allows international graduates from eligible Canadian institutions to gain valuable work experience in Canada for up to three years. This experience can be instrumental in transitioning to permanent residency.
Key Changes Effective November 1, 2024
- Field of Study Requirements:
Graduates who applied for a study permit after November 1, 2024, must have completed a program in an eligible field of study and in a designated learning institution (DLI) that was at least 8 months long (or 900 hours for Quebec programs). These fields are aligned with Canada’s labor market needs, focusing on areas experiencing long-term shortages.
The fields of study are divided into 6 broad categories:
- agriculture and agri-food
- education
- health care
- science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
- trade
- transport
- Language Proficiency:
All applicants are now required to demonstrate a minimum language proficiency in either French or English. A Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 7 is required for university graduates, and CLB 5 for college graduates. Canada.ca
- Application Timing:
You must apply for your PGWP within 180 days of receiving confirmation that you’ve completed your program of study. Canada.ca

Impact on Permanent Residency
The work experience gained through the PGWP can be pivotal in qualifying for permanent residency programs, such as the Canadian Experience Class under the Express Entry system. This pathway allows international graduates to contribute to and become integral members of Canadian society.
Note: Immigration policies and requirements can change. It’s advisable to consult the official Government of Canada website or seek professional advice for the most current information.
